CITY OF SPARKS PROPOSES DEEPER BUDGET REDUCTIONS
Today, the City of Sparks took further steps to balance its $72.1 million operating budget for the remainder of the current fiscal year (FY 2008-2009) and will continue the operating reduction into the next fiscal year (FY 2009-2010) by reducing expenditures by another $2.7 million.

SPARKS PARKS & RECREATION TO HOLD NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY FOR KIDS
Sparks, NV – A New Year's Eve party just for kids will be held on Wednesday, December 31 at the Alf Sorensen Community Center in Sparks. Hours are 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. or overnight until 9:00 a.m. The program, for ages 6 to 13, gives parents the opportunity to enjoy New Year's Eve knowing their children are having fun in a safe, supervised environment.

Sparks Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau offices will be closed December 25 and 26 for the holidays.  We will be open again on December 29th.

GOVERNMENT FINANCE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION HONORS SPARKS BUDGET PROCESS
- The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) is pleased to announce that the City of Sparks, Nevada has received the GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its Fiscal Year 2009 Budget.  This is the first time Sparks has received the GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

DOG PARK LOCATED AT SPARKS MARINA PARK CLOSED FOR MAINTENANCE
SPARKS, NV - The dog park located on the south end of the Sparks Marina Park will be closed December 10-12 for maintenance. The park will reopen on Saturday, December 13.

Sparks, NV Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge! The City of Sparks is once again offering adult dodgeball for men and women age 18 and older. If you are an individual looking for an extremely competitive sport, our leagues may not be for you. The goal is to have fun.

ALF SORENSEN COMMUNITY CENTER POOL CLOSED FOR MAINTENANCE
Sparks, NV – The pool at the Alf Sorensen Community Center in Sparks is currently closed for maintenance and upgrades. The main and toddler pools are being re-plastered for the first time since the construction of the center in 1982.

VEHICULAR TRAFFIC PROHIBITED AT REGIONAL PARK SITE IN SPARKS
Sparks, NV – Motorized traffic is now prohibited at a 270 acre regional park site located east of Pyramid Way and south of Disc Drive. The City of Sparks is developing the parcel into Wedekind Regional Park with passive uses including upgraded trails.

Sparks, NV - On Monday, December 1, at 7:30 a.m. the Sparks Christmas Tree will arrive and be placed at Victorian Square just in time for Sparks Hometowne Christmas, presented by Intuit. The 60 foot tall Douglas Fir comes from Garibaldi, Oregon, sister city to Sparks.

Sparks, NV - Start the holiday season off with a healthy run or walk on Thanksgiving Day at the Turkey Trot event at the Sparks Marina Park. Choose from a non-timed 2 mile walk or run around the Marina and a 10K timed run that extends into the surrounding neighborhood. The first race begins at 8:30 a.m.

The City of Sparks will be conducting an emergency training exercise on Wednesday, November 5, beginning at 8:30 a.m. to noon.  The exercise will simulate an earthquake of a magnitude 6.0.

STEVEN D. ASHER SELECTED FOR SPARKS POLICE CHIEF
Sparks City Manager Shaun Carey has announced Commander Steven D. Asher as his choice to lead the Sparks Police Department.  Commander Asher is a 23 year veteran of the Sparks Police Department, and was chosen after an extensive internal recruitment.

SPARKS ANNOUNCES WEEK-LONG COMMUNITY FORUM TO INCREASE TOURISM
As a follow-up to the Community Assessment conducted by Destination Development International (DDI) earlier this year, the City of Sparks, Nevada, has contracted with DDI to take the next step and create a brand identity for the community.  Funding for the $114,000 contract comes from the City's tourism and marketing budget which is derived from hotel room taxes.  The funding is restricted only to funding city marketing programs.

Sparks, NV - Learn the art of playing the harp by taking part in a new introductory class offered through the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department. Beverly Colgan, principal harpist for the Reno Philharmonic, will be teaching the course geared for ages 10 and older.
